messaging training and consults
intersectional messaging consults
We combine more than 30 years of strategic communications experience with the latest in persuasive communications research and progressive intersectional politics to edit, advise and rewrite materials as diverse as social media campaigns, pamphlets, fact sheets, web site content or multi-page printed resources.
Our process draws on work from:
- Passing the Message Stick,
- Common Cause,
- the Public Interest Advocacy Centre,
- Workshop NZ and
- Frameworks in the US.
The results speak for themselves: materials that are inspiring, transformative and easy to understand yet still grounded in the evidence and without shying away from hard truths.
how we work
Below are a number of case studies detailing messaging consults we have undertaken with a broad range of clients. In most cases, clients share draft documents with us, which we will then mark-up and return. However, we are also available to participate in steering committees for larger campaigns or to draft messaging guidance for your team to develop final materials. We’re happy to be flexible!
We’d love to talk with you about your messaging projects today.
messaging the movement
As champions of social justice, we are committed to a world in which everyone can thrive, a world of equality, gender equity, racial justice, freedom of sexual orientation and gender identity, disability inclusion and more.
Now, more than ever, in this time of uncertainty and unrest, we are aware that there are many who are not yet convinced this world is possible, people who have not yet made up their minds.
intertwine’s communications training draws on decades of social psychology to connect the dots between the evidence you already know and the language and messaging structure you need to create powerful, transformative and persuasive communications. Please book a discussion to discuss your organisation’s needs.
tailored training
We can also tailor our messaging training for your circumstances.
We recently created a module for the Australian Human Rights Commission on intersectional language relating to sex and gender discrimination.
This year will be the second year running a tailored series of messaging workshops for local Council grantees of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, accompanied by an online discussion and feedback space for participants in the months following the workshops and leading up to the campaign delivery.
Can we create something that meets your needs?
case studies
fast facts (client: Safe+Equal)
Safe+Equal’s task was to update the Fast Facts resource that provides statistics and key facts about how many people experience family and gender-based violence in Australia, its impacts, and how attitudes towards violence are changing. intertwine trained the team as a whole in values-based messaging and vision-barrier-action messaging structures, and then assisted with a comprehensive edit on the document itself. Each page started with a vision statement, the statistics themselves identified the barriers, and then each page concluded with a clear action to address those issues.
From an intersectional perspective, one of the biggest challenges in this project was ensuring that statistics accurately identified causes of increased prevalence in certain communities. We’re hugely proud of this project and commend the Safe+Equal team for a fantastic resource.
achieving equal access (client: Fair Agenda)
Achieving Equal Access: Abortion Care in Australia was a position paper authored by Australian Women’s Health Network (AWHN), Children by Choice, Fair Agenda, MSI Australia and the Global and Women’s Health, School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine — Monash University. This resource aims to support the changes we need, by explaining the issues around abortion care in Australia. It also shares experiences from women who have accessed abortion care in Australia.
intertwine provided messaging and editorial support.
safety & respect for all women (client: Fair Agenda)
During the 2022 federal election campaign, a number of candidates made divisive comments about trans women’s rights. Fair Agenda worked with intertwine to draft a comprehensive, values-based intersectional statement for organisations to endorse. The statement used the vision-barrier-action structure and relied heavily on Anat Shenker-Osorio’s research into language that worked for persuasive outcomes on this topic. Thanks to Fair Agenda’s tireless advocacy, more than 50 organisations signed on to the campaign.
The campaign is no longer live, but you can read more below.
